What is Young People of the Year (YOPEY)?
Young People of the Year is a campaign to give young people a fairer image in the media and wider society as a whole by revealing, recognising and rewarding young unsung heroes and highlighting them as positive role models for other young people to emulate.
Who supports YOPEY?
Nottinghamshire Young People of the Year award is supported by the Youth Service which is part of Nottinghamshire County Council.
The Prime Minister describes Young People of the Year as a “wonderful celebration of Britain’s youth”. At a meeting with YOPEY winners at No10 Downing Street, he went on to echo YOPEY’s aims by saying “You young people are the kind of heroes, who live next door, and in the next street, and throughout our neighbourhoods, the kind of heroes other young people might want to become.”
If you know someone who is deserving of an award than please complete a nomination form. A nomination form can be for anything from shopping for the elderly in their local community to fundraising for save the children, to being a peer mentor. The young person will have the opportunity to have their story along with their photo in the local press.

Last Years Winners - Nottinghamshire 2008 Overall Winner: Stefan Prest, 19 from Bilsthorpe Stefan has opened a cyber café for teenagers and children that has reduced anti-social behaviour in his village of Bilsthorpe The café is just the most visible sign of the work Stefan has done on behalf of his generation in the former mining village. He has been leading initiatives to give young people a voice and more facilities in Bilsthorpe since he was 13. Now 19 and studying for a degree, Stefan could have left for university. But he decided to stay at home and commute to college, so he can continue to speak up for young people and run the café. The café opens in the village hall two evenings a week and is attended by about 80, eight to 18-year-olds each week. Sally was nominated by the deputy head of Ollerton Primary School. He is the school’s special educational needs co-ordinator and as such deals with Sally’s mum Joanne who without Sally would have difficulty communicating. This has given him a special insight into how Sally and her sister Holly, who is too young for the YOPEY competition at eight, help their mum in her silent world. “Sally is brilliant,” said the deputy head. “She acts as a go-between for her class teacher and her mum who is totally deaf. “She is a very bright girl. She is fully proficient at sign language and acts as a highly effective and competent interpreter. She is ready all the time to help.” Find out more... www.youngpeopleoftheyear.org/subsite.php?site=nottinghamshire'08 |
