Your waste - who does what?

Your district council is responsible for collecting your household waste from dustbins and wheelie bins. If you live in the city boundary, Nottingham City Council has this responsibility.

Site closures and works

Please note that some of the Household Waste Recycling Centres are currently undergoing works to enable essential maintenance and improvements.

Three sites are currently affected:

  • Langar Household Waste Recycling Centre - will be closed for approximately 4 weeks from Sunday 30 November 2008.
  • Beeston Household Waste Recycling Centre - will be closed for approximately 6 months from Sunday 11 January 2009.
  • Kirkby Household Waste Recycling Centre - will be closed for approximately 4 weeks from Sunday 11 January 2009.

We currently run a number of waste minimisation schemes in Nottinghamshire to encourage different groups of people to reduce the amount of waste they produce and to recycle more.These projects include promoting real nappies and the Schools Waste Action Club.

What about rubbish that isn't collected?

There are 18 household waste recycling centres across Nottinghamshire. They accept your household waste, which isn't picked up by your district council's collection crews.

How much domestic waste is produced in Nottinghamshire?

The residents of Nottinghamshire generate around 430,000 tonnes of domestic waste each year. The district and borough councils collect 310,000 tonnes from households and members of the public deliver an additional 120,000 tonnes to the 18 household waste recycling centres (rubbish tips) .

Of this, 220,000 tonnes is disposed of in landfill sites and 60,000 tonnes is incinerated, with the energy used to heat Nottingham city centre buildings and provide electricity for the National Grid. A further 100,000 tonnes is recycled and 60,000 tonnes is composted.
