What is a hate crime?

In Nottinghamshire hate crime is:

“any incident, which may or may not constitute a criminal offence, which is perceived by the victim or any other person, as being motivated by prejudice or hate”.

A hate crime is any criminal offence that is motivated by hostility or prejudice based upon the victim’s:

  • disability
  • race, colour, ethnic origin, nationality or national origins
  • religion or belief
  • sexual orientation
  • gender or gender identity
  • ‘difference’, through their lifestyle or characteristics, such as ‘Goths’ .

If you, or anybody else thinks something has happened because of prejudice and hate then it is treated as a hate crime. This can include:

  • verbal abuse, insults,  threats and name calling
  • damage to your property
  • graffitti or writing
  • children being bullied at school,
  • malicious complaints
  • antisocial behaviour
  • attacks or vilence
  • arson and setting fires.

Hate crime may cause feelings of anger, frustration, isolation, helplessness and fear. If you’re a victim, it’s important to know you’re not alone and that help is available.

The police take hate crime seriously and will support you. With your consent and where appropriate, the police will seek to share information about your incident with other agencies so you can be provided with the very best support and services available.
