Due to the cross-boundary nature of air pollution, Nottinghamshire County Council works with the City Council and the district councils on local air quality management. Together, we jointly produced an air quality improvement strategy 'A Breath of Fresh Air for Nottinghamshire' [PDF 3.57MB] pdf logo .

Air pollution in Nottinghamshire is a very important issue and it is therefore essential that air quality and pollution is controlled through effective monitoring and management.

District council's have the main responsibility for undertaking air quality monitoring and management.  When the monitoring process identifies areas where pollution levels exceed national air quality objectives, the district council has to declare an 'air quality management area' (AQMA) and develop an action plan to tackle the pollution.

Currently within Nottinghamshire, Broxtowe Borough Council, Gedling Borough Council and Rushcliffe Borough Council have all declared air quality management areas.

Where an air quality issue is due to transport, Nottinghamshire County Council also has a responsibility to address this. In such cases the County Council therefore works in partnership with the district councils to develop the air quality management area action plans (which are available from the district councils' website links above). The Nottinghamshire Local Transport Plan [PDF 8.7MB] pdf logo also details how we will try to deliver transport improvements in the county, including addressing transport related air quality issues.
