In November 2008 Newark and Sherwood District Council granted permission for a new bus station to be built as part of the £50m ASDA Potterdyke redevelopment.
The old bus station closed on 29 May 2010 and temporary bus stops were set up.
The new bus station is now complete and opened for business on Saturday 12 November 2011, following an official opening and preview on Friday 11 November.
Facilities
The new bus station is a fully enclosed building offering protection from the weather with comfortable seating and CCTV providing a more relaxed and safer waiting environment. It has departure bays and, for customer safety and comfort, boarding will be controlled by automatic doors that will only open when there is a bus at the bay.
Inside, the bus station has:
- male and female toilets
- a separate toilet for disabled persons
- a baby changing room
- five undercover cycle stands, under the exterior canopy
- vending machines.
In addition to electronic information displays, printed timetable information and an online journey planning kiosk, the bus station staff are on hand to answer questions and provide travel information.
Opening hours
The bus station building is open from 7am to 7pm Monday to Saturday, and an out of hours bay (Bay A) is provided for night time and Sunday services.
It has been estimated that there will be around 2,000 bus arrivals and departures a week – with around 25,000 passenger arrivals and departures over the same period.
The County Council will take responsibility for maintaining and managing the bus station.

We have produced a leaflet about the opening of the new bus station [PDF 798KB]
