Phillipson heads British success in Florida
Nottinghamshire's David Phillipson gained the biggest success of his career on Wednesday when he moved into the men's singles second round at the Florida Open as British players enjoyed a largely successful day at wheelchair tennis tournaments in the USA and South Africa.
British No 2 Phillipson beat Austrian fifth seed and world No. 6 Martin Legner 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 at the Florida Open, the first Super Series event of the season on the 2010 NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, to gain his first ever win over a world top 10 player.
After reaching the last 16 in Boca Raton for the second successive year, Phillipson now looks well-placed to go on and possibly reach his first quarter-final at Super Series level, the most important tier of wheelchair tennis tournament outside of those held at the Grand Slams.

Farewell to Sam Hynd
Paralympic swimming champion, Sam Hynd has announced he will be moving to Wales to continue his studies and pursue his gold medal ambitions for the 2012 Paralympics.
Sam (18) of Kirkby-in-Ashfield has been part of the Nottinghamshire County Council Nova Centurion swim squad since the age of 14.
Sam admitted it had been a really difficult decision to move away from an environment where he has received so much support from not only his club, but also from Nottinghamshire County Council, Mansfield, and Ashfield District Councils. He said; “I shall be returning home during holiday periods, during which time I will train with the Mansfield Nova Squad. I will of course keep in touch with Glenn, who has coached me for the past four years. Without him I would not have achieved all the successes I have in recent times.”
Sam and team mate Charlotte Henshaw are currently competing at the IPC European Championships in Reykjavik, Iceland (18- 25 October) where they will be hoping to kick start the season with some great results. They are accompanied by Nottinghamshire County Council’s Inside Out Project Officer - Carol Halpin who is travelling as part of the official coaching staff.

Nottinghamshire County Council’s Nova Centurion swim squad had a superb four days in Glasgow as double Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington and Katherine Wyld qualified for the World Championships in Italy at the end of July. Wyld won the 100m free (55.52), while Adlington produced stunning swims to claim the 200m (1:57.15) and 800m (8:16.81) titles. Sasha Matthews, 18 took the 400m crown (4:11.65), with 15-year-old Ann Morris third. This was a remarkable result in a competition where juniors compete against seniors. Morris will compete in the European Junior Championships later this month alongside fellow Nova swimmers Dan Mills and Georgia Hohmann.
Nova now has three 400m freestyle swimmers in the British top ten.
Olympian Jess Sylvester narrowly failed to make the team placing 4th in a time of 56.08 in the 100m freestyle race.
Welsh Disability Short Short Course Championships
Paralympic Champion Sam Hynd was again in action at the Welsh Disability Short Course Championships, held in Newport-Gwent over the weekend. This meet doubled as the trials for the IPC World Short Course Championships to be held in Rio, Brazil, later this year.
Although fighting a heavy cold, Sam swam a excellent 400m Freestyle, to swim inside the qualifying time of 4.30 for the S8 Category, clocking 4.26.
Sam's fellow Paralympic Swimmer, Charlotte Henshaw, swam a great 100m breaststroke inside her own personal best by some 2 seconds, but just failed to make the qualifying standard for the World Short Course by 0.6 seconds. She will be in good form however, looking towards the IPC European Long Course Championships which will take place in October.
Both Sam and Charlotte will be competing in the ASA Youth Championships later this month, which will be their last Long Course domestic competition before the European championships start.
Sam's brother Oliver Hynd was also competing in the event and showed a big improvement in his SB9 100m Breaststroke event to clock a best time by a large margin.

World Cup successes for Notts pair
Nottinghamshire based Campbell Walsh took a gold medal this weekend in the World Cup 2 race held in Bratislava. Walsh, who is from Glasgow but trains at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham, was sixth in the first of the three-event World Cup series but took top spot in the second K1 event, edging out Italy's Daniele Molmenti by 1.55 seconds.
The previous week, fellow Scot and Notts-based canoeist David Florence won a historic double bronze in the first race of the series in Pau, France.
Florence made history by being the first British athlete to win two medals in a major international competition in two individual events. He took bronze in his familiar Men’s C1 (canoe single) class and he also won a Bronze medal in the Men’s C2 (canoe double) class with Men’s K1 athlete Richard Hounslow.
The final race of the series will be in Augsburg on 11/12 July and then athletes will prepare for the World Championships in Seu D’Urgell in September.
