Frequently Asked Questions
We hope that this section will help to answer some common enquiries, but staff are pleased to answer all enquiries personally. Please contact us for more information.
Do you have copying facilities?
Yes, we offer a wide range of reprographic services – photocopying, reader printer copying from microfiche, scanning and photography. You can also use your own camera. For further details about these services please see the Reprographic Services section on our website.
Do you have a car park?
We do have a car park but unfortunately there is only very limited space for visitors. If all spaces are taken, visitors are requested to use nearby public car parks. Visitors should vacate the car park as soon as they have finished using the office. There is one designated disabled space for use by Blue Badge holders. This can be booked but we do need 24 hours notice in order to guarantee a space. Please telephone us to book a space.
Can I use my laptop?
Yes, you can use your laptop. If you want to plug it in to our power supply you will need to complete a Disclaimer Form as we cannot accept responsibility for any loss or damage to your equipment or files. A circuit breaker will be provided for you. Free broadband WiFi is also available.
Do I need a reader ticket?
You do not require a ticket to use any records on microfiche, use the reference library or access the computers, but you will need a ticket to view original archives. We are part of the County Archive Research Network (CARN). If you do not have a CARN ticket you will need to bring along printed proof of your name and address and something that shows your signature.
Is there a charge to use the Archives?
No, you do not have to pay to visit the office and undertake research but charges are made for copying material.
Do I need to book a microfiche viewer?
No, we have a large number of viewers available.
What facilities do you have for people with a disability?
Various facilities are available to assist visitors with disabilities. For more information on these, and access to the building please see our Accessibility section on the website.
Can you provide birth, marriage and death certificates?
No, these certificates can only be purchased from the appropriate district register office or from the General Register Office. However, you can search the General Register Office Indexes at our office to obtain the information you need to order certificates. Please see the General Register Office web site at www.gro.gov.uk for details about ordering certificates. We do hold registers of baptisms, marriages and burials for many Anglican and Non Conformist churches and chapels.
I am getting married and I need a copy of my baptism certificate. Can you issue one?
Yes, we can provide a typed certified copy of a baptism entry if you can provide the name of the church and an approximate date of the baptism. The cost of a certified copy is £9.00 plus £1.60 for postage and handling. Please contact us to check if we hold a register for the church you require. Once we have found the entry in the register you can either download a Certified Copy order form from our website or we can post a form to you.
Can I find out where a relative is buried?
We hold registers of burials for Anglican churches and registers for some public cemeteries. If you have an idea of where and when the death occurred we can try and direct you to possible sources or provide contact details for records held elsewhere. Please see our Cemetery Records information sheet [PDF 214KB]
for further details.
Can you do some research for me?
We have a Research Service available if you are unable to visit in person and would like research to be carried out on your behalf. Searches can be carried out in most sources held at Nottinghamshire Archives for family, local and house history. Upon completion you will receive a report of the sources used and details of the results of the research with suggestions for further work. A charge of £24 per hour or part thereof (incl VAT) is payable in advance. Enquiries about the nature of our holdings and suggested avenues of research will be answered free of charge. A list of independent researchers can also be found on our website.
Do you keep school records?
Yes, we do. We hold admission registers, school log books and other miscellaneous records for a variety of schools. Unfortunately admission registers (lists of the children at the school) have not survived for every school. Log books are like a diary of activities kept by the Head Teacher but they do not usually mention names of pupils but may give lists of teachers. Please contact us if you have an enquiry about a specific school.
I have lost my exam certificates can I get replacements from you?
No, we don’t hold copies of exam certificates. Records are kept by the examination board responsible for awarding your qualification. Your school or college may be able to give you details about the relevant board. Please see the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority website for further details: www.qcda.gov.uk/4521.aspx.
