Names of Slaves

Schedule of Slaves (reference: DD/M/41/5)

Schedule of slaves, c 1680 This document dates to about 1680. Little is known about it. It survived as a wrapper for some legal papers among the archives of a Nottinghamshire solicitor.

The document lists 33 individuals. Some of them are individuals and others are listed in family groups. The epithets or titles used to describe some of the people may indicate their ethnic origins. There are no additional papers to tell us where these people came from or what happened to them.

The schedule also lists some of the equipment used by the slaves on the plantation. Copper vats, moulds and gudgeons are instruments used in the process of raw sugar cane.

The document remains as a testament to these people. We do not know what hardships they had to go through.
