George Africanus' Property
Title deed (reference: M 11044)
By the early nineteenth century George had enough money to purchase his own property. This plan is part of a document (a ' title deed') which shows the purchase he made in 1829. The property (or ' messuage') was purchased from Abraham Hardy for the sum (or ' consideration') of £380.
The property was situated in Chandlers Lane and Bluchers Yard. The plan shows that the purchase also included two other properties that George let out to Peter Conroy and Ann Rose. All the occupants would share the pump in the yard for their water supplies.
George already owned property before he bought this building in 1829, as he was already voting as a freeholder in parliamentary elections in 1826. The document confirms that George, who had been a slave in Wolverhampton, was as a free man able to build up his businesses and purchase his own property.
