George Africanus' Businesses

Sutton and Son's trade directory for 1815 (reference: Belper Library, 97.2)

Nottingham directory, 1815 Trade directories were commercial publications produced by various companies every two or three years. Tradespeople and businesses would pay to appear in the directory with a record of the street on which they operated. They were, in effect, a precursor of today's Yellow Pages.

This directory was produced in 1815 by Sutton and Son. It shows that George was running a servant's register office on Chandlers Lane in Nottingham.

By 1826 George had changed profession and was listed in the poll book for that year as a brassfounder. George had learnt his trade in brassfounding whilst he was living with the Molyneux family in Wolverhampton. George must have been a successful businessman as he was able to purchase property by the 1820s.
