George Africanus' Businesses
Sutton and Son's trade directory for 1815 (reference: Belper Library, 97.2)
Trade directories were commercial publications produced by various companies every two or three years. Tradespeople and businesses would pay to appear in the directory with a record of the street on which they operated. They were, in effect, a precursor of today's Yellow Pages.
This directory was produced in 1815 by Sutton and Son. It shows that George was running a servant's register office on Chandlers Lane in Nottingham.
By 1826 George had changed profession and was listed in the poll book for that year as a brassfounder. George had learnt his trade in brassfounding whilst he was living with the Molyneux family in Wolverhampton. George must have been a successful businessman as he was able to purchase property by the 1820s.
