Raleigh Cycle Company photo: men at work (DD/RN/6/48/2/71)
This photograph shows workers employed at the Raleigh Cycle Company. The photograph was taken in Raleigh's Faraday Road factory in the mid-twentieth century.
The Raleigh Cycle Company was a big employer in Nottingham ever since it was founded in December 1888 when lawyer Frank Bowden expanded the bicycle workshop started by Woodhead, Angois and Ellis on Raleigh Street in Nottingham in 1886. The success of Raleigh led to the company acquiring many other cycle manufacturers such as Humber in 1932 and Rudge Whitworth in 1943. Raleigh exported its bicycles and other products all over the world, including to North America, Asia and Africa.
