Mary Gershom
Bishop's Transcript of St Augustine's church, Flintham (reference: DR1/5/77/46)
This is the baptism of Mary Gershom, who was the daughter of Hannah Gershom and Anthony Joseph. Hannah is described in the document as 'an East Indian', whilst Anthony is recorded as 'an African'.
The baptism took place on 24 July 1692 and is another early reference to the baptism of a person of African-Caribbean descent.
Sadly, Mary died very soon after her baptism. Her burial took place on 10 September 1693.
The document shown is a bishop's transcript, a copy of the parish register.
