The earliest known reference to an individual of African Caribbean origin held at Nottinghamshire Archives dates to 1645. In that year, John Americanus was baptised at the church of St Mary Magdalene in Newark.
Little is known of John Americanus. He was baptised on 30 March 1645, and is described in the register as a 'blackamore'. His name in the register is spelt 'Amerricamus'.
