Thursday Tours

Why not join us on one of our regular Thursday tours and see what goes on behind the scenes?

Time: each tour starts at 2.30pm and will last between 1 hour and 90 minutes

Cost: £2.00

An Archives' workshop Wednesday Workshops

Our regular workshops take place on the third Wednesday of each month.

Workshops this winter:

  • 18 January 2012: Court records: Crime
    Explore the origins of the Quarter Sessions and records on court proceedings and criminals
  • 15 February 2012: Court records: Rich and Poor
    Find out what the Quarter Sessions records can tell us about taxation, alehouses, debt and more!
  • 21 March 2012: Court records: Landscapes and People
    From railways and bridges to dissenters and papists, find out more about the Quarter Sessions in our final Court records workshop

Time: each workshop starts at 2.30pm and will last 1 hour

Archives Skills Workshops

Join us on one of our special workshops helping you to get the most out of archives

Workshops this winter:

  • 24 January 2012: Reading parish registers (English)
    Have a go at reading the handwriting of parish registers and learn how to find out more about your ancestors
  • 31 January 2012: Reading parish registers (Latin)
    Get hints and tips on how to read and translate Latin in parish registers - no experience needed!
  • 13 March 2012: Dates and Weights
    Find out how our ancestors counted days, months and years and explore how to read regnal years and saints' days in parish registers and other documents. We'll also explore old measurements and money

Time: each workshop starts at 2.30pm and will last one and a half hours

Cost: £3.50 per place

Taster Sessions

Not sure what to look for when you visit Archives? Don’t know how to use the microfiche or not sure what the catalogues and indexes are for? Why not book a small-group or one-to-one Taster Session? These sessions last for fifteen minutes and will help you to get the most out of your visit. And they’re free!

Taster Sessions provide general introductions to the search room. It is also possible to bolt on one of our 'special interest' topics:

  • Cemetery records
  • Electoral registers
  • Building plans
  • Maps
  • Poor law records.

Taster Sessions can be arranged for Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays between 9.30am and 11.30am and 2.15pm and 4.00pm

You can also arrange a Taster Session by telephone.

To book a place on all other events, please use the Nottinghamshire Archives Events Booking Form:

  • Download the Nottinghamshire Archives Events Booking Form [PDF 91KB] pdf logo
  • Complete the form
  • Return the form to Nottinghamshire Archives with your remittance. Cheques should be made payable to Nottinghamshire County Council
  • Once your booking is accepted, you will receive confirmation of your booking via phone or email. Once the booking is confirmed, payment is non-refundable
  • However, if no spaces are available when you book, we will return your cheque to you
  • For further advice and help, please contact us.
