Parent Partnership Service

Local authorities have a statutory duty to provide or commission a Parent Partnership Service for their area. In Nottinghamshire. The service is jointly funded by both Nottinghamshire County Council and the City of Nottingham Council, to provide support to parents and carers of children with special educational needs living across both these areas. Local authorities are encouraged to ensure that their parent partnership service is run at 'arms length’ to increase parental confidence in the service’s impartiality, and in Nottinghamshire this is provided via line-management from the Family Welfare Association, an independent voluntary organisation.

The service’s main responsibilities towards parents/carers of children with special educational needs are to:

  • provide information, advice and support
  • promote partnerships between all those involved in the education of their children - parents schools, the Local Authority and voluntary organisations
  • assist them in getting their views heard and valued by professionals.

In order to provide this, the Parent Partnership Service offers:

  • telephone helpline for parents and professionals
  • individual support from trained volunteers or staff for parents eg at meetings in school or with LA officers
  • advice/support around exclusions
  • local drop-in sessions for parents
  • dedicated Asian support worker
  • Cool Kids Project (Children’s Fund) to involve children in giving their views
  • information for parents, eg leaflets and a regular termly newsletter, some in alternative languages/formats
  • website (www.ppsnotts.org.uk)
  • training on SEN for parents and professionals
  • conferences on SEN issues, aimed primarily at parents
  • information and contacts with other organisations who may be able to offer support.
