Safer routes to school

Safer routes to school schemes improve conditions (both in terms of safety and the environment) on the main walking and cycling routes to school.

Working with schools and the local community means installing cycling and walking facilities where they’re most needed.  Greater community links and better access to facilities will create a healthier and safer environment and lessen dependence on the car.

Schemes include physical measures such as safe crossing points and school awareness zones. Safer routes to school initiatives are often linked to school travel plans.
