Post: School Cook
Duties and Responsibilities: School cooks provide nutritious, balanced and value-for-money meals to children every lunchtime in term time.
They usually work from 8.30 or 9am to 1.30 or 2pm, beginning by checking they have all the ingredients they'll need for the menu they've planned and allocating different tasks to their kitchen assistants.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Assist Cook Supervisor with cooking of school meals.
- Assist Cook Supervisor with supervision of staff.
- Kitchen cleaning and cleaning of equipment used by Cook/Assistant Cook during the day.
- Help with service of meal and washing up after meal.
- Maintenance of good standard of hygiene in kitchen.
- Assist Cook Supervisor in training new staff in cooking methods and methods of work in kitchen.
- Assist Cook Supervisor with health and safety training.
- Assist the Cook Supervisor with book-keeping.
- Help any member of kitchen staff as required.
- Take control of kitchen in absence of Cook Supervisor.
- Help with special functions which take place in the school connected with the Education Catering Service or the school and with games refreshments in secondary schools.
- Any other duties which may reasonably be regarded as within the nature of the duties and responsibilities/grade of the post as defined, subject to the proviso that normally any changes of a permanent nature shall be incorporated into the job description in specific terms.
