Wicket! Playing for Success (PfS) at Trent Bridge
The Wicket! centre works with young people aged 9-14 years for ten weeks in after school programmes of study from 3.30-6.30pm. Schools are invited to participate and pupils attend voluntarily. Involvement in PfS culminates in a high profile graduation evening at which all pupils are presented with certificates from a professional cricketer, free family tickets to a match and a goodie bag.
PfS is a national initiative of successful partnerships between the Department for Education (DfE), local authorities and host sports clubs. There are now over 160 PfS centres operating across the country. The core purpose is to provide innovative and challenging learning experiences for Key Stage 2 and 3 young people who are slightly under-achieving or lacking in confidence and self-esteem. The programme is designed to support schools to raise standards in literacy, numeracy and ICT during out of school hours learning sessions.
Looking at healthy living also forms a much enjoyed element of the PfS programme and has been supported by the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics team in Nottinghamshire Community Health (NHS) division.
In addition to this, a range of partnerships have developed including Nottingham Trent and Nottingham universities and Rushcliffe volunteer bureau who provide a bank of twenty volunteers who are an invaluable source of support to young people allowing for greater one-to-one tuition; some family learning projects; in-school projects and with Rushcliffe Borough Council on a pilot programme, Cricket4Life, as part of the obesity strategy.
