SENCO Conference 2009
This took place on 30 June at the National College for School Leadership. It was attended by 230 delegates who heard key note speeches from:
- Anthony May, Corporate Director of Children and Young People’s Services at Nottinghamshire County Council. Anthony spoke about how the national SEN agenda impacts on the work undertaken in Nottinghamshire, the outcome of Nottinghamshire’s recent SEN Review. He also set out how the County Council intends to integrate the services that are provided for children and young people. A copy of Anthony May’s presentation can be downloaded here:

- Richard Rieser, Director of ‘World of Inclusion’ formerly ‘Disability Equality in Education. Richard’s presentation examined the development of inclusive education for disabled pupils, considered what is happening internationally and in the UK, reviewed the impact of the duty to promote Disability Equality and a look at what works in developing inclusive education and how schools need to build on this.
- Jenny Digges, Regional Adviser for the National Strategies. Jenny’s speech was entitled ‘Mainstreaming: from process to outcomes’. This shared and developed the concept of mainstreaming in a national and local context. Consideration was also given to the implications of national developments on a local level including the Progression Guidance Project and the Inclusion Development Programme.
In addition to the main speakers delegates attended two seminars from a choice of five:
- Differentiation, Personalised Learning and Quality Teaching – Professor John Visser;
- Developing the Inclusive Classroom – Richard Rieser;
- My Life in Education: A perspective from a young man with Asperger’s – Dean Beadle;
- Teaching and supporting children with ADHD – Fin O’Regan;
- Emotional well-being in the curriculum for children with special educational needs – Professor Barry Carpenter.
