There are two different ways in which Nottinghamshire education authority can learn that your child may need to have an Assessment of special educational needs.

  • Your child's special educational needs may have been known for some time. Many people may have been offering advice and support. Your child may have been receiving help through an individual programme. Your child's teacher or school, with your knowledge, may in these circumstances wish to bring your child's special educational needs to the attention of the Local Authority (LA). In Nottinghamshire this would usually be done through discussion between teachers, yourself and your local Educational Psychologist.
  • You may be concerned about your child's special educational needs. You will have talked with your child's teacher(s) about your concerns but still feel you wish your child's needs to be Assessed. You can write to the LA to ask that an Assessment under the Education Act 1996 is made.
