An Assessment in most cases takes up to 26 weeks. There are three main steps in the Assessment process:

  1. The Local Authority (LA) 's "Proposal" to assess, or a parent's request for assessment, and the decision to go ahead or not with an Assessment. This should take no longer than 6 weeks.
  2. Carrying out the Assessment itself. This should take no longer than 10 weeks.
  3. The LA's decision about the information which has been received. This should take no longer than 2 weeks. There may be discussions between you and the LA about their decision. This should take no longer than 8 weeks. You will be involved and kept informed about each of these steps.
