If you are a member of a family where a child has been adopted, our Support After Adoption team offers support, advice, information and counselling to birth relatives of any age and at any stage of the adoption.
You may need to talk over some feelings of unresolved loss or the impact of receiving news about your child, or you may feel anxious about the lack of information on how your child is doing in their adoptive home.
The Support After Adoption team and Nottingham City Council's Post Adoption service offer a fortnightly drop-in group specifically aimed at women who have had children adopted. Find out more on 0115 915 0320.
Also available is the Independent Birth Family Counselling Service, a confidential service for birth relatives of children placed or in the process of being placed for adoption. You can contact the team on 01525 405281 or through the social worker involved with your case.
A useful source of information is the leaflet produced by the British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF) called ‘Child From the Past: England and Wales. Information for parents who place their child for adoption'. This covers the adoption laws and services, getting in touch with an adopted child and dealing with difficulties. See www.baaf.org.uk, or call 0207 421 2604.
There is also a national support group called Natural Parents Network for parents and relatives who have lost children to adoption. Call 0845 4565031 Mon/Tues/Fri 9.30am-12 noon, or visit www.n-p-n.co.uk or e-mail administrator@n-p-n.co.uk.
If you are a grandparent, there’s a national group called the Grandparents Association. They run an advice line on 0845 4349585.
If you want help with any of the above, call Support After Adoption on 01623 437 988 [Mon 9.30am-1.00pm, Tues 4.00pm-7.30pm, Thurs 1.00pm-4.00pm] or e-mail support.afteradoption@nottscc.gov.uk
