Bassetlaw district comprises an area of 246 square miles in the north of Nottinghamshire. It is a diverse district with two main population centres:

  • Worksop (to the west); and
  • Retford (to the east).

Worksop was within the Nottinghamshire coalfield and has suffered in recent years through the closure of pits and the decline of other industries in the area. Retford is a traditional market town that has also suffered, like many rural communities, from a lack of investment, poor transport infrastructure, and a decline in the population.

The primary aim of this proposal is to raise standards of teaching and learning and the achievement of all pupils aged 11-18 in Bassetlaw. The barriers to realising this vision for Bassetlaw are real, significant and can only be overcome by a major investment in the educational infrastructure.

The overall scheme is an ambitious one and the County Council's vision requires the complete re-building of six secondary schools, and the extensive refurbishment of both a seventh and of the special school within the community.

New, radical post-16 proposals are an important part of this vision and these are submitted in partnership with North Nottinghamshire College and with the support of Nottinghamshire Learning and Skills Council.

These pages have been designed to answer any questions you may have about the scheme. If you are unfamiliar with PFI then you will find information on how the scheme works as well as why the scheme is needed in Bassetlaw.

You will also find details on the actual proposal and how it fits within the local context.
