What can I do with my old fridge or freezer?

If you need to dispose of an old fridge or freezer, you should ensure it’s done safely to prevent accidents or harm to the environment.  If you’re a householder your district or borough council provides a collection service for bulky items, although they can charge a collection fee.

Alternatively, you can take your appliance to your local Household Waste and Recycling Centre for disposal free-of-charge. We're responsible for these sites and will ensure that your old appliance is disposed of safely. You can help us by ensuring that your old fridge or freezer is emptied of food-stuffs and cleaned before you send it for disposal.

In some areas, domestic appliance retailers or charities may accept fridges/freezers if they are in good working order for re-use.

Remember fly-tipping is illegal and dumped refrigerators and freezers pose a hazard to small children or animals who may become harmed or trapped inside.

From 1 January 2002, ozone depleting substances (ODS) including CFCs and HCFCs must be removed from refrigeration equipment before it’s scrapped. This includes ODS in the cooling system of the refrigerator and the insulating foam inside the walls and door.  We’ve made arrangements with a contractor who removes these substances prior to disposal.   For more information see our page on fridges and freezers.

When’s my rubbish due to be collected? Why hasn’t it been collected?

In Nottinghamshire, the local borough and district councils arrange the collection of waste from private households. If your rubbish bin has been missed by mistake and you would like it collected, or if you’ve any other queries about your refuse collection service, contact your local borough and district councils.

I’ve bulky household rubbish to get rid of, which is too big for the dustbin, and I can’t get to the household waste recycling centre (rubbish tip).

For DIY types of waste, such as rubble and soil, you should contact a private waste disposal company or hire a skip (contact details can be found in the Yellow Pages).

For items such as cookers, fridges, washing machines etc, you need to contact your local borough and district councils, who operate a separate bulky household waste collection service, for which there may be a charge.  Alternatively, you can take these items to a household watse recycling centre yourself where disposal is free for household items.

How can I get rid of asbestos?

We provide licensed sites in Nottinghamshire where residents can dispose of asbestos from their home/garden.  For details of how to dispose of your asbestos, please visit our asbestos page or contact us.

If the material has been removed by a builder/tradesperson at your property, he must arrange and pay for the disposal at a licensed commercial waste facility.  It’s illegal for a tradesperson to dismantle your asbestos building and leave it for you to dispose of.

If you require specialist advice on handling or removing asbestos, contact the Environment Agency on tel: 0115 945 5722.
