The Sustainable Developer Guide is a publication intended to inform and inspire developers and to stimulate more sustainable design and construction in Nottinghamshire.

It has been prepared by a partnership of Nottinghamshire local authorities, working together over two years with the Environment Agency and the Newark and Sherwood Energy Agency.  Since its publication in July 2004, the Sustainable Developer Guide Website and a mini guide version have been created.

The main guide is a 36-page document which signposts the reader to key information about tackling sustainable issues and raising standards.  It is available free of charge to all developers or their agents undertaking new build or refurbishment schemes and includes:

  • a set of recommendations on a range of key topics (including water use and drainage, building design, energy use, waste and transport)
  • directions to the most relevant sources of practical information (publications and web sites)
  • a range of case studies where innovative new development has successfully incorporated several sustainable elements (including Sherwood Energy Village and the University of Nottingham's Jubilee Campus)

The mini guide leaflet, published in January 2005, is tailored to those embarking on smaller building projects, such as house extensions, and shows with eye catching illustrations how aspects of design and construction can reduce running and maintenance costs as well as benefit the environment.

The Steering Group has worked to ensure that the project has been widely publicised and the documents freely available at local authorities planning reception areas.  The mini guide is also be available in main libraries through the county.
