Introduction

Community Action for Wildlife is a project that is running across the whole of Nottinghamshire. The project involves a range of opportunities including practical conservation, long term placement opportunities and resources for youth group leaders to run environmental activities. The project is funded by the Alliance SSP and Nottinghamshire County Council. The project was originally organised by the Nottinghamshire Biodiversity Action Group and partner organisations include Sherwood Forest Community Rangers, Sherwood Forest Country Park and Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust.

What does Community Action for Wildlife offer?

The opportunities currently on offer are split into three sections:

  • Fun in a Box is aimed at schools, play schemes and community and youth groups. The self-contained boxes contain exciting outdoor activities that make learning about wildlife fun. There are 17 different activity boxes available, including kite making, pond dipping, woodland art and orienteering. Free training is available about how to use the boxes, health and safety and how to set up and lead group activities outdoors. For more details please contact the Sherwood Forest Community Rangers, tel: 01623 822447

  • Shadow Rangers voluntary work placements are a great basis for those wishing to start a career in countryside management. Sherwood Forest Community Rangers will provide each Shadow Ranger with a mentor from a number of host organisations. You will receive on-the-job training including practical site management, working with communities, and planning and organising countryside events, guided walks and environmental education activities. For more information contact the Sherwood Forest Community Rangers, tel: 01623 822447.

  • The Sherwood Conservation Skills Project is based in Sherwood Forest Country Park. The project offers a chance for you to do your bit for this ancient habitat by working alongside the Rangers. This project supplies a great opportunity to learn about the forest and gain experience of conservation management, wildlife monitoring and working with visitors. For more information contact the Ranger Team at Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre, tel: 01623 823202
