With one foot in the world of performance and the other in the world of science, Science on Stage is a creative enterprise programme aimed at engaging young people in science through performance. The programme has been running in the County for the past 13 years and has engaged with over 5,000 young people over this period. Over a period of 8 months in each year, Science on Stage works with groups of young people, from primary and secondary schools, in developing a performance including dance, music and drama with scientific themes, which in the past have included photosynthesis, evolution, gases and quantum mechanics.
The programme is managed by two retired Nottinghamshire teachers who give their time free of charge and engage professional artists in the performance at a minimal cost.
The May 2009 performance 'Albedo', will include a choral repertoire and dance from the New English Contemporary Ballet, with a focus on the theme of global warming through the examination of the disappearance of the polar ice cap and its consequences. Ten schools are participating with approximately 250 performers in total and an anticipated audience of 1000.
