The Local Economic Assessment

The 'Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Act (2009)' placed a new legal duty on unitary and county councils to prepare a Local Economic Assessment (LEA) of their area. LEAs help us to gather evidence about the economy of an area and find out what the key local economic issues and trends are. This helps to inform the policy decisions of local authorities and their partners.

The development of an LEA gave businesses, local government, the further and higher education and voluntary sectors the opportunity to agree the economic priorities for the area. It provides a chance to take advantage of the opportunities and face the challenges to achieving continued economic growth and prosperity.

The Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Economic Assessment

The City and County Councils agreed to jointly produce an LEA, covering both the Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council administrative areas, but reflecting that local economic issues cross council boundaries. Following development and consultation, the LEA now consists of a full version and a Strategic Economic Opportunities (SEO) document. The SEO summarises the agreed opportunities and policy challenges. These documents were welcomed by the Full Council at its meeting of the 30 June 2011.

The SEO document pulls together some of the most significant opportunities and issues affecting the area. It was created in consultation with a wide range of public, private and voluntary organisations with an interest in the economic performance of the area.

As new information or reports become available which are considered relevant to the economic assessment of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, they will be added here or links will be provided to appropriate web sites. This will build up a useful collection of economic information.
